At Woolly Naturals Pellet Co. we are 3 generations of sheep shearer, my dad started shearing in the 70's and now my boys and I are carrying on the family business. In the 50+ years our family has been shearing sheep we have seen the wool producer get less and less money for their wool. The decrease in price is due mostly to the synthetic fibers that have flooded the market and so much of our wool is shipped out of country to be washed and then returned to the USA in usable products, so we rely heavily on other countries purchasing our wool. There is still a demand for the finer wools but there is no market for the courser wools.
There are between 4 to 5 million sheep sheared in the USA annually for the well being of the Sheep. Roughly 50% of the wool in the USA is wasted; its either burned of left to rot in landfills resulting in about 14 million pound of waste each year. Research shows wool can be effectively used as an all natural fertilizer and soil amendment.
